5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT secondary resource   August 19, 2010
C. Muehlenhard
I really like these CDs!

If you are new to Spanish, I wouldn't recommend these CDs as your ONLY resource for learning Spanish. They do come with a book, but it's not quite systematic or thorough enough to be your only resource. (I am using Barbara Bregstein's [2005] Easy Spanish Step-By-Step as my main book.)

But the Spanish Behind the Wheel CDs are WONDERFUL ways to listen to and repeat after a native Spanish speaker. They are great for learning pronunciation and the rhythm of the language. They are also a great way to learn and review more vocabulary words.

The CDs are called "Spanish Behind the Wheel," but you can listen to them while doing tasks like housework, getting dressed, etc.

2 out of 5 stars Not very good, but cheap   August 18, 2010
Anne (Lafayette Hill, PA, United States)
I have several issues with Behind The Wheel Spanish:

- The English speaker's voice is terribly monotonous. He sounds bored and almost annoyed.
- The lessons are very brief. To really learn them, you'll need to repeat them, but there are no track dividers, so you have to scan backwards to get to the last jump-off point. Also, the English speaker continually repeats annoying and useless phrases (my favorites: "Remember: an infinitive is just the dictionary definition of a verb" and "Learner, remember to always repeat after the speaker"), so you end up having to listen to them multiple times
- As other reviewers have said, the lessons don't really build on each other. It hops from one thing to something completely unrelated.
- The accompanying booklet does not match what is spoken. Some spoken bits are skipped, and some words that are not spoken are added. It's almost like it refers to a different version of the recording.

On the plus side, it's very cheap. Note that I bought the downloadable version, not the CD's.

4 out of 5 stars Learning spanish   August 9, 2010
Michael V. Torchio (Dedham, MA.)
This is an excellent product to buyfor someone wanting to learn beginner Spanish. I find it very easy to follow and have picked up a lot from the first disc. I occasionally have a problem separating the "D" from "B" when they speak, but that is the only fault I can find with it. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to learn Spanish.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing instructional about it.   July 26, 2010

You better have a healthy background in Spanish before purchasing even Spanish 1. With its strictly "listen, repeat, listen, repeat" method of delivery, this is not an instructional set of CDs. It's more like audio flash cards. Almost no time is spent helping the learner understand why a sentence or question is phrased the way it is. Almost no time is dedicated to discussing conjugation. The CDs simply jump right in. Here's the word. Here's that word in Spanish. Here's the next word. Here's that word in Spanish. Here's a sentence. Here's that sentence in Spanish. Terrible, terrible, terrible approach to teaching. And when other reviewers point out that the lessons are random, that is no exageration. Instead of introducing a verb, for instance, and then using that verb in multiple ways in succession in order to reinforce it, the listener hears it once, and then we're off to something new. Yes, I am still putting my set to use. With a year of college Spanish and a couple of night classes under my belt, I am getting something out it, but there is so much more they could have done with this to make it more effective and even a little fun. One more thing: The presenter's voice is horribly monotone with such little expression, you might want to avoid these CDs if only because they might have you falling asleep at the wheel.

4 out of 5 stars Good But Better At Home Than On The Road   July 25, 2010
A. D. Lum (Honolulu, Hawaii)
The voices and pronunciations are clear. There is a native English speaker and a native Spanish speaker as well. The English speaker at least to my ear, could pass as a native Spanish speaker. You have the important elements of audio learning in this CD: Clear speaking voices, good enunciation, and repetition. I was pleased to learn that the instructor also explains grammatical constructs. Some audio learning courses focus much more on repetition and do not give enough explanation of the mechanics of the language. This audio course is more balanced than others I have used.

I dropped a star because the good is also the bad. Things are explained well, which helps you to learn better (in my opinion). But the explanations are detailed enough that you need to listen carefully - and this you can't easily do while driving. The many brief distractions that occur while driving can leave you saying, "What was that?". It ain't easy to rewind a CD.

Otherwise, I like it.
